TransGard has announced the installation of its 5,000th substation fence, a significant milestone in the work and history of the company.

Bird waste in substations is a significant threat that is easy to underestimate as a mere nuisance. Because substation operators may not understand the seriousness of the threat, keeping a substation free from bird waste and preventing bird incursions may be lower priorities than other operational challenges. But the consequences of inaction are great.

When a wild animal causes a power outage in the U.S., it is often a squirrel that gets the attention. But year after year, raccoons are also responsible for major substation outages from Maryland to California.
There are now an estimated 15-20 times more raccoons in the U.S. than in the 1930s, and more than twice as many humans. Those numbers alone reflect part of the issue – but there are other factors that make raccoons a unique challenge for substations

As we outlined in our most recent post, TransGard has always worked to expand solutions to prevent animals from entering electrical substations. This holds true for threats from the air as well from the ground.

Bird activity at industrial sites and substations poses serious risks: equipment damage, flashovers, contamination, regulatory fines, and health threats like viruses and parasites contained in dried bird droppings.  A full spectrum mitigation strategy against birds integrates a range of deterrents to create an environment that birds actively avoid, without harm to the birds or disruption to operations.

TransGard has always been a source of solutions when it comes to assessing animal incursion challenges, and identifying the best options for specific substations. Animal intrusions at substations pose serious risks: equipment failure, flashovers, outages, regulatory fines, and repairs that can soar into the hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Declining habitat is reducing food and shelter availability for a number of squirrel species in the U.S., driving them into urban and industrial areas, including electrical substations. This means the challenge of animals entering substations for food and shelter is not going away.
